Abstract

It is a commonly accepted statement that the ultimate goal of the scientific research is to discover the laws of nature. Linked to this statement seems to be the presupposition that in nature there are necessary connections; they would be exactly the result of the application of the laws of nature to phenomena. This article re-examines a Tractarian view on science in order to show how the young Wittgenstein deals with the statement and a presupposition mentioned. My conclusion is that he completely expels necessity out of the science, referring all necessary propositions to the domain of logic. Even the meta-theoretical principles of science, which deals with aspects of theories that are seen as necessary, are rejected as examples of scientific proposals.
