Abstract

Little is known about the fact that Margaret Atwood began her literary career as a poet, although she gained international prominence as a novelist.  In this article, I present my translation, with commentaries, into Brazilian Portuguese of the poems “This is a Photograph of Me”,  published in The Circle Game (1966), and “Tricks with Mirrors” published in You are happy (1974), both part of the Canadian author's initial poetic phase. Both poems are centered in the figure of women in relation to image devices, photography in the first text and mirror in the second, to propose reflections on the objectification of women and the perception of reality. In the comments, I discuss the strategies used to translate free verse and to emphasize the author's feminist point of view, addressing issues such as phonic texture, enjambments and ambiguity.
