MARIQUITA SÁNCHEZ'S NARRATIVES OF THE TREATMENT GIVEN FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN RECUERDOS DEL BUENOS AYRES VIRREYNAL

Abstract

This paper aims to present the narratives of Mariquita Sánchez about the treatment given for women and children in her memoirs recorded in the work Recuerdos del Buenos Ayres Virreynal, dictated to Santiago de Estrada. The methodological approach adopted is qualitative, from a bibliographical perspective. The corpus of analysis is the narratives presented in this memoir, published in 2019 by Maizal argentinian publishing editor. The analysis method is based on content analysis, proposed by Bardin (2011), having as the thematic unit the term “virreynato” and as categories of analysis the words “mujer, niño/a” and their respective plurals. We conclude that the impressions recorded by Mariquita shows that women were raised to take care of the home and the children, and young boys were educated not to show feelings and to have autonomy for the family subsistence. The description of facts by a person who lived through that period gives more concreteness and credibility to what is known, adding other important details that would only be possible to know by living in that era. These accounts are of great relevance, as they can contribute to various fields of study, such as history, literature, and anthropology.
