Abstract

The growth pattern in aquatic organisms varies periodically according to environmental factors, but mainly through densitydependent mechanisms of adjustment to abundance reduction by fishing. In this paper, growth parameters of lobsters Panulirus argus and Panulirus laevicauda are determined by means of the computer program ELEFAN applied to length distributions for period 1970-1993, in Northeast Brazil, with the following results: (1) males and females of P. argus are
caught from 2.1 and 2.4 years of age;(2) males and females of P. laevicauda are caught from 2.5 and 2.6 years of age; (3) statistical tests showed there to be no difference in the growth rate of males and females, so that the following equations should represent the grawth patterns in Iength (em) of the /obster species, irrespective of sex: P. argus: It = 430 [1 - exp (-0232 t)] and P. laevicauda: lt = 412 [1 - exp(-0.223 t)].
