Abstract

In this paper an analysis is made of the length at age data for the tomtate, Haemulon aurolineatum population that inhabits the tropical waters off Ceará State, Brazil, with the aim of determining its growth curve. The data were obtained by backcalculation of sizes estimated from age rings in scales of individuais with fork length varying in the range of 13.2-19.8 cm, from June, 1984 to December, 1987. The tomtate individuais, as an average, have their birthday in the ftrst quarter. The growth equation (em) is: Lt = 20,0 [ 1 - e-0,506(t+1,71) ].This species boasts a high growth coefficient ( K = 0.506) which is consistent with the feeding habits of ftrst degree predators and equivalent to a growth rate of 1.6 cm/year.
