Minor modes of resistance: two Amazonian aesthetic-political expressions

Abstract

This paper reflects on aesthetic-political forms of resistance in the Amazon through the lens of “minor modes”, drawing on concepts such as monstrosity (Canguilhem), infamy (Foucault), the grotesque (Muniz Sodré and Raquel Paiva), the ritornello (Deleuze & Guattari), as well as Adorno’s critique of auditory regression and his notion of “minimal transition”, and Edward Said’s insights into the invention of the East and the politics of listening. Revisiting the thesis of the invented Amazon (Neide Gondim), the text explores practices that emerge within ruin and silencing, activating forms of minoritarian resistance that displace the dominant regime of visibility and the dispositive of normalization.
