Abstract

A great effort of research work has been put into the knowledge of the extent of microbiological pollution of seawater off Fortaleza country, Ceará State. In this paper, the rate of faecal contamination of the seawater off Barra do Ceará beach was evaluated by means of counting the total and faecal coliforms, and such na index was correlated with the rainfall registered for this region. The interest for this a study stems from this area being close to the Ceará river estuary. The analysis was based on the taking of 24 samples in two collecting points (P1 and P2) in the period from november, 1997 to october, 1998. The variation of the pollution index did not seem to hold any correlation with the rainy season. The estimates of the MPN of coliforms varied in the range of 21 to > 2,400/1,000 ml for total coliforms and O to 2,400/1,000ml for faecal coliforms. The finding of high índices of faecal coliforms in some samples means that Barra do Ceará beach can hardly be considered in excellent condition, but it cannot be taken either as improper for the purposes of leisure time and swimming by the population.
