Abstract

This present article is based on the analysis of the novel Com Armas Sonolentas: um Romance de Formação (2018) by Carola Saavedra. The guideline of the novel is the traumatic experience of motherhood, in apparently independent scenarios, but creates a shared story of three women: the matrilineal lineage founded on strangeness and renunciation in relation to an unwanted child. On the part of the mother, both the amorous relationships that lead to pregnancy and the time before the child is born are characterized by a deep estrangement and the desire to reject affective relationship. To support our reading, we examined motherhood in a brief theoretical section, understood as a historical, political, discursive, ideological and psychoanalytic construction and besides constituting an apparatus (Dispositif) in connection of power. In this sense, we can affirm that the view of maternity transmitted in the novel is transgressive; contributing to the reordering of stereotypes and prejudices /preconceptions linked to maternity; an occasion full with the demands of unconditional maternal love. Saavedra's narratives constitute a Bildungsroman that deeply problematizes the essentialist and biologizing view of the female body, reserved in its procreative and childcare role.
