TRANSLATION INTO SPANISH OF A CHRONICLE BY JÚLIA LOPES DE ALMEIDA:

COMPROMISE BETWEEN NATURALIZATION AND EXOTICIZATION

Abstract

This article is about the translation – from Portuguese to Spanish – of one of the chronicles by Brazilian writer Júlia Lopes de Almeida (1862-1934), included in the book Dois dedos de prosa: o cotidiano carioca por Júlia Lopes de Almeida (2016), organized by Angela di Stasio, Anna Faedrich and Marcus Venicio Ribeiro, which contains forty chronicles by the author, written between 1908 and 1912, in the newspaper O Paiz. The topics covered in the translated chronicle deal with robberies during the summer in Rio de Janeiro, the closure of schools promoted by public administrators, who should prioritize and care for education and the uncertainties about Morro de Santo Antônio's future. In other words, the chronicle deals with the realities of everyday life in Rio de Janeiro, since Lopes de Almeida sought to explore the social conditions of Brazil, standing out for her criticism of social backwardness, patriarchy and gender injustice, themes that also refer to the positivist ideal of progress based on rational social transformations. The text also explores, firstly, the writer's criticism and socio-historical-cultural context (Coutinho, 2004), then the aesthetic issues surrounding the Brazilian chronicle of this period (Candido et al., 1992; Coutinho, 2004) and, finally, the issue of naturalization and exoticization in the translation process (Torres; Cesco, 2023).
