Abstract

The aim of the present study was to assess the use of the “Inventory of Drinking Situations” and the “Inventory of Drug Taking Situations” in patients seen at the drug rehabilitation center in a psychiatric public hospital in Fortaleza-CE. Patients attending the service were included in the study (n=21). A total of 9 alcohol dependents and 12 drug dependents completed the survey. The results showed an elevated rate of drug and alcohol use when patients are facing risk situations. In both groups the most difficult situations were related to alcohol (53.3 %) and drug (89%) use itself, followed by situations involving entertainment and pleasure, (52%) in alcohol dependents, and (78%) in drug dependents. The study shows similarities in the dependent behavior of both alcohol and drug users. The findings support the hypothesis of a shared mechanism for alcohol and drug related behaviors, as far as addiction is concerned.
