Resumen

Our goal was to show the trajectory of a premature low-weight newborn from its admission at the Intensive Care Unit to hospital discharge in a Maternity in Fortaleza-CE, from July 12th to September 13th 2002, focusing on care by the health team. One used data from the patient’s report, from observation, from treatment practice and from Nursing care practice. At the ICU, the newborn showed complications inherent to prematurity and to treatment, but overcame those alterations, being sent to the kangaroo mother nursery. Parents interacted with the newborn and with the working team.  One concluded that the human care method was relevant for the survival and recovery of the newborn.
