Abstract

This work aimed to know the feelings and expectations lived by first time pregnant adolescents in the third quarter of pregnancy regarding childbirth. It was a qualitative study carried out in January and February 2007 in the prenatal clinic of the municipal district of Maracanaú-CE-Brazil. Data were collected through interview carried out with 20 adolescents. The following categories were verified: pain — meaning of giving birth; feeling insecure; fear of what might happen with the baby; and need of orientation. The results showed that most of the pregnant women, when identify pain as an outstanding feeling in the delivery process, reveals fear facing the discomfort that such pain can provoke, besides fear facing baby’s vitality and doubts on how to raise the baby. The pregnant adolescent faces biological and psycho-social changes, being essential the health professionals’ sensitization regarding the importance of childbirth for the mother
